The lower end of rafter is attached at the mauerlat. It typically has a single face that is higher on one end than the other. Each side of a gambrel roof has two sloped faces the lower of which is either perpendicular or at a slight angle to the ground. I presently have ample space for storage and no squeak or bounce to the floor.

Single slope roofs are easy to build and are compatible with almost any architectural style. At the first stage the mauerlat is installed. It also is often used on dormers extensions built on a basic roof to provide more light or space inside.
